Reviving Revenue: How a 48-Hour Checkout Overhaul With FireNet Designs Recovered Thousands in Lost Sales

The Client:

A high-volume, high-trust eCommerce merchant serving a fiercely loyal (and niche) audience.

While the brand prefers to remain anonymous—to keep competitors guessing—they’re a powerhouse in their category. From custom uniforms to official honors and insignia, they handle fulfillment for one of the most disciplined customer bases on the planet.

And yet... their checkout was a mess.

The Problem:

2–5% of all checkouts were failing.
And it wasn’t just a blip.

Customers were reporting payment errors, orders failing to submit, and—in the brand’s words—“the worst-case scenario during peak season.” These weren’t simple theme bugs either. Their Shopify Plus checkout had been deeply customized with JavaScript, CSS, and Shopify Scripts—functionality that Shopify had just announced would soon be deprecated with Checkout 2.0.

But the client couldn’t wait until “someday.”

Checkout failures were costing them real money, right now.

  • Up to $1,000/hour in lost revenue
  • Cart abandonment due to trust-breaking errors
  • Panic from the dev team who didn’t know how to safely port the functionality

The Execution:

We were brought in with one clear instruction: “You’ve got 48 hours.”

Here’s how we responded:

Step 1: Prioritize the Critical 20%

We jumped on a call with the brand’s CTO and PM. After cutting away the fluff, we identified three essential custom functions that had to survive the move to Checkout 2.0:

  1. Shipping Rate Adjustments
    – Auto-apply free shipping if certain order conditions were met.
  2. Conditional Payment Methods
    – Hide or show payment types based on specific checkout inputs (e.g., order notes).
  3. Shipping Method Renaming
    – Rename confusing shipping labels (like "Priority Mail") to more customer-friendly terms with estimated delivery ranges.

Step 2: Build a Custom Checkout App

We got to work building a private Shopify app to restore these critical features—without relying on legacy scripts or code that Shopify would soon kill off. Every logic path was re-engineered to integrate seamlessly with Checkout 2.0.

Step 3: Go Live (Flawlessly)

With hours to spare, we launched. Not only did we eliminate the error, but we enhanced the customer flow. The checkout was now faster, smarter, and more reliable than ever.

The Results:

Zero checkout failures after launch
Recovered up to $1,000/hour in lost sales
Happy customers & retained trust during peak season
Future-proofed checkout built on Shopify’s latest architecture

Here’s what their CTO said:

“Once more, a heartfelt thank you! As our peak season rolls in, hearing customers say ‘I can’t checkout’ is every e-commerce brand’s worst nightmare. You’ve been an absolute lifesaver.”
